Booking choice: The 4-day cruise from Cairo. Check dates Tour details
A Nile cruise is two very different holidays depending on the month. In January, Luxor reaches about 23°C by day and drops to 7°C at night. In July, it averages 41°C. The cruise itself barely changes; your energy at 2 p.m. in the Valley of the Kings does.
The temperatures below are 1991 to 2020 averages from the Egyptian Meteorological Authority and NOAA, as published in the climate tables for Luxor, Aswan and Cairo.
The quick answer
October to April is the best time for a Nile cruise. December to February is peak season, with warm days and cool nights. March, April, October and November are the sweet spot: warm, busier than summer, quieter than Christmas. June to August is cheap and very hot, with Luxor and Aswan averaging over 41°C. A Cairo evening cruise works in any month.
What is the best month to go on a Nile cruise?
November. Luxor averages 29°C by day and 13°C at night, the summer heat is gone and the Christmas crowds haven't arrived. February and March come close.
We'd pick November first, then February and the first half of March. In 2027, February and early March fall during Ramadan, which shifts restaurant and evening schedules; more on that below. December and January are the coolest months, which is pleasant on the temple days and chilly on deck after dark, with nights around 7 to 9°C in Luxor.
October is the bargain shoulder month: still hot at about 35°C in Luxor, but cooling every week. April gets hot quickly and brings the khamsin, the dusty spring wind.
Book a winter departure early: three nights from Aswan to Luxor with flights from Cairo, free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Mild from November to March, hot in April, May, September and October, and extreme from June to August.
Average daily highs and lows in °C (Luxor, Aswan, Cairo). Add 1 or 2 degrees on the open water at midday; subtract a few on deck at night.

When is peak season and low season for Nile cruises?
Peak runs from December to February, busiest at Christmas, New Year and Easter. Low season is June to August.
Winter is when Europe and North America want sun, so ships fill, guides are busy and the Valley of the Kings queues lengthen. Book a winter cruise early; every trip on this site cancels free up to 24 hours before, so there's little risk in locking in a date. The dahabiya operator Nour el Nil recommends September to May and warns that June to August can be too hot for comfort (i-escape).
In summer the temples empty out. If you can handle the heat, you'll have Karnak's hypostyle hall nearly to yourself at 6 a.m. For the 2026-27 season dates and news, see the cruise season post.

Is a Nile cruise worth it in summer?
Only if you love heat and early mornings. Luxor and Aswan average about 41°C (106°F) from June to August; a Cairo evening cruise is fine.
Summer cruise days start at dawn and end by late morning, with the afternoon spent in the cabin or by the pool. Ships run their sightseeing around that rhythm, so you see the same sites, just earlier. Drink more water than you think you need, and wear a hat at every stop.
Cairo is different. The city averages 35°C at the July peak, and evenings on the river are warm, not cruel. A dinner boat after dark is one of the most comfortable places in Cairo in August, with the breeze on the open deck. Skip the sunset felucca in midsummer heat if you are sensitive to sun; the boat has little shade.
A cool evening on the open deck, a buffet and a show: the Cairo cruise works in every month.

They run as usual, but evening schedules shift around iftar, the sunset meal. Ramadan 2027 is expected from about 8 February to 8 March.
Dates depend on the moon sighting; the projection is a start on 8 February 2027 and Eid al-Fitr on 9 March (Wego). During the month, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, and the city comes alive after iftar. Tourist sites and ships keep running. Some evening boats move their departure to fit around the iftar meal, so check the time on your booking.
Ramadan nights in Cairo are some of the liveliest of the year, with lanterns, late meals and crowds in the old city. Be discreet about eating and drinking in public by day outside tourist venues. Our Ramadan 2027 dinner cruise post covers the evening boats in detail.

What month did the Nile flood, and why doesn't it anymore?
The flood rose from about June and peaked in August and September. It ended after the Aswan High Dam was completed in 1970.
The yearly inundation came from the Ethiopian summer monsoon, which swelled the Blue Nile and the Atbara and sent a surge of silt-rich water down to Egypt (Flooding of the Nile). The ancient Egyptian calendar named a whole season after it, Akhet, roughly June to October.
Since the High Dam and Lake Nasser, the water level below Aswan is controlled, and the river stays steady through the year. That is why the cruise ships run in every month. The one seasonal quirk left is lower water in some winter weeks: the Oberoi Zahra even sells a separate low-water itinerary (Oberoi Hotels).

What are the disadvantages of the Nile river for travellers?
Heat, the spring khamsin, mosquitoes at dusk, water you shouldn't swim in, and ships moored side by side at the big stops.
- Heat: from May to September, temple days are hard work. See the table above.
- The khamsin: a hot, dusty wind that usually arrives in April, sometimes March to May, raising temperatures fast for a few hours (Khamsin).
- Mosquitoes: they bite on the river at dusk, so pack repellent. Egypt has been certified malaria-free by the WHO since October 2024 (WHO).
- Water quality: the CDC lists the Nile valley among areas with schistosomiasis (bilharzia), caught through skin contact with freshwater (CDC). Don't swim or paddle in it, and drink bottled water.
- Moorings: at Luxor and Aswan, ships tie up alongside each other, and your window may face the next boat.

What time of day is best for a Cairo evening cruise?
Start an hour before sunset for a felucca; take a dinner boat after dark. Sunset is around 5 p.m. in winter and 8 p.m. in late June.
Cairo's sunset moves a lot through the year: about 4:58 p.m. in December, 6:04 p.m. in March, 7:58 p.m. in June and 6:26 p.m. in October (SolarWatch). Egypt uses summer time from late April to late October, which is why the summer sunsets are so late.
For the private felucca, book the slot that starts about an hour before sunset and you'll watch the light change on the water. Dinner boats run after dark anyway, which suits the lit skyline. Felucca or dinner cruise compares the two.
One private hour under sail, timed for the sunset, with hotel pickup by car.

Is December a good time for a Nile cruise?
Yes, with warm days around 24°C in Luxor and cool nights near 9°C. It's also the busiest month, so book early and bring a jacket for the deck.
Does the Nile still flood?
No. The annual flood ended after the Aswan High Dam was completed in 1970. The river level is now controlled and steady all year.
Are Nile cruises cheaper in summer?
Summer is low season, and ships and hotels compete for fewer guests. The trade-off is heat over 40°C on the temple days.
Can I take a Nile cruise during Ramadan?
Yes. Ships, sites and dinner boats keep running, though evening schedules may shift around iftar. Ramadan 2027 is projected from about 8 February to 8 March.
