The multi-day Nile cruise sails between Luxor and Aswan, and its busy season follows the weather: October to April, when afternoons are warm rather than brutal. In Cairo the evening boats run all year, but they feel the same rush when the hotels fill.

This post covers the 2026-27 season as of 14 October 2026: the holiday weeks with their dates, the booking windows we would use, the current government travel advice, and the news from the river.

The quick answer

Plan on October 2026 to April 2027, with the tightest weeks at Christmas and New Year, around Chinese New Year on 6 February, and at Easter on 28 March (Western) and 2 May (Coptic). Book Christmas sailings four to eight months out; for most other dates a few weeks is fine on the packages here, which cancel free up to 24 hours before. The US rates Egypt Level 2, with no warning on the Nile Valley.

When is the 2026-27 Nile cruise season?

October 2026 to April 2027. December to February is the peak, with cool evenings on deck; October, November, March and April are warmer and a little quieter.

The Nile no longer floods, so the ships run in every month. Demand does not. From June to August, Luxor and Aswan regularly pass 40°C, and some ships slow down or go into maintenance, as Pure Nile Tours notes in its departure-day guide. The season proper starts when the heat breaks in October.

Our full month-by-month view is in the best time for a Nile cruise. The short version for this winter is below.

What are the peak weeks of the 2026-27 season?

Christmas to New Year, Coptic Christmas on 7 January, the week of Chinese New Year from 5 February, and the two Easters on 28 March and 2 May 2027.

Western Easter 2027 falls on 28 March and Orthodox Easter, which Egypt's Copts follow, on 2 May, per the Old Farmer's Almanac. Chinese New Year is on 6 February 2027, the Year of the Goat, with China's statutory holiday from 5 to 11 February according to Examine China. Ramadan is expected to start two days later, on 8 February. We cover what that means for the evenings in our Ramadan 2027 post.

Sham el-Nessim, the spring holiday every Egyptian family spends outdoors, lands on the Monday after Coptic Easter: 3 May 2027. Expect the riverbanks in Cairo to be full.

When should you book a Nile cruise for 2026-27?

For Christmas and New Year, four to eight months ahead on a luxury ship, which means now or never. For other dates on a standard package, a few weeks is usually enough.

Egypt Tours Portal advises booking Christmas and New Year luxury sailings four to eight months ahead and says holiday demand can push rates 20 to 30 percent above off-season fares. It also flags the New Year's Eve gala dinner, which some ships bill as a separate supplement. Ask before you pay.

The packages on this site are easier. The 4-day cruise from Cairo cancels free up to 24 hours before and lets you reserve now and pay later, so holding a December date costs nothing. It flies you to Aswan and sails three nights to Luxor. Entrance tickets and all drinks, water included, are extra; the 8-day tour includes the entrance fees. Cairo dinner boats and feluccas rarely need more than a few days' notice, except on New Year's Eve and Eid.

Is it safe to go on a Nile cruise at the moment?

The government advice is unchanged on the Nile Valley. The US rates Egypt Level 2, exercise increased caution, and both the US and UK advise against North Sinai and border areas, not Luxor or Aswan.

The US State Department advisory was issued on 15 July 2025 and last updated on 11 August 2025. Its do-not-travel areas are North and Middle Sinai and the border areas, and it says to avoid the Western Desert without a licensed tour company. The UK's FCDO advice was last updated on 4 August 2026, for entry rules and regional tensions. It names Luxor, Qina, Aswan, Abu Simbel and the Valley of the Kings as exceptions to its Western Desert warning.

The practical points are medical. The US advisory says most Nile cruise boats have no doctor on board, that hospitals in Luxor and Aswan are good, and that you should not swim in the Nile. Ships do run aground now and then: in October 2026 a cruise ship with 99 tourists grounded opposite the Kom Ombo temple dock and was refloated by river police, Egypt Independent reported. Travel insurance with medical cover is the one thing we would not skip. More in safety and dress code.

What is new on the Nile for 2026-27?

The Grand Egyptian Museum's first full season, new ships from Viking and Oberoi, record tourist numbers and, just after the season, the total solar eclipse over Luxor on 2 August 2027.

  • The Grand Egyptian Museum opened fully on 1 November 2025, so this is its first full winter. The foreign ticket goes up from 1 November 2026. Our GEM and Nile day post has the hours and ticket rules.
  • Viking Sekhmet, an 82-guest ship, was handed over at the Massara shipyard in Cairo, Travel Market Report wrote on 30 September 2026.
  • Oberoi's dahabiyas Melouk and Malekat, seven suites each, are due in late 2026, per Egyptian Streets.
  • More visitors. Egypt counted 6.1 million arrivals from January to April 2026, up 7%, according to government figures quoted by ATTA. Full ships in peak weeks follow from that.
  • The eclipse. Totality over Luxor on 2 August 2027 lasts 6 minutes 22 seconds, from 13:02 local time, per Wikipedia's eclipse data. Viking already sells a dedicated eclipse itinerary. It is midsummer heat, but expect August 2027 cabins to go early.

Does the Esna lock or the water level affect sailings?

Rarely in a way you notice. Every Luxor to Aswan ship passes the Esna lock, which was rebuilt in 2021, and the river level is controlled by the High Dam all year.

Egypt's irrigation ministry reopened the east lock at the Esna barrages in May 2021 after about five months of rehabilitation, its largest since the early 1990s, and cut its fill-and-empty cycle from 22 to about 15 minutes, Al-Bawaba reported. The minister called it one of the most important locks on the Nile because the cruise ships between Luxor and Aswan use it.

The flood that once set the calendar ended when the Aswan High Dam was completed in 1970. If your itinerary changes, it is usually the order of the visits, not the trip. A Cairo evening is not affected at all: see felucca or dinner cruise for that choice.
