The Nile runs through the middle of Cairo, between the towers of Zamalek and the palms of Giza.
Sail it at sunset in a felucca, dine on deck while a tanoura dancer spins, or fly south for three nights on the water.

Choose your Cairo Nile cruise
In the centre, a dinner boat with buffet and live show. On the left, the cheapest way onto the river, a private
felucca. On the right, the real thing: three nights on a cruise ship between Aswan and Luxor, with flights from Cairo.
A wooden sailboat just for your group, at the hour you choose. The listing gives one hour on the water; the rest is the private car to and from your hotel.
Two hours on a lit-up dinner boat: open buffet, live music, a whirling tanoura dancer and a belly dancer. Then up to the open deck for the city lights.
The classic multi-day cruise, packaged from Cairo: fly to Aswan, sail three nights to Luxor past Kom Ombo and Edfu, float over Luxor in a balloon, fly back.

Before you book
In Cairo, the Nile is an evening.
Search for a Nile cruise from Cairo and you get two very different things under one name. The first is the
Cairo evening: a two-hour dinner boat with a buffet and a show, or a felucca sail at sunset. Several operators
sail every night, the price is close to a good restaurant dinner, and you sleep in your own hotel.
The second is the cruise people picture: a ship with cabins, three or four nights, temples at every stop.
That cruise does not start in Cairo. It sails between Luxor and Aswan, far to the south, and the "from Cairo"
packages begin with a flight. Long sailings all the way from Cairo do exist, but as rare specialist departures,
not something you book for next week.
1970
The year the Nile stopped flooding. The Aswan High Dam was completed and
Lake Nasser held back the summer flood, which is why the river through Cairo is steady enough for boats in every month.

01
A cruise from Cairo?
Evening boats, yes. Multi-day cruises start in Luxor or Aswan, reached by plane or sleeper train.
02
Pyramids from the boat?
No. Giza is on the desert plateau west of the river. See it by day.
03
When to go?
October to April. Summer days in Luxor and Aswan pass 40°C.
04
Show or quiet?
Dinner boats bring music and dancers. A felucca brings wind and the sound of the water.
Your evening
How a Cairo dinner cruise runs
About three to four hours door to door if you take the hotel pickup, two of them on the river.
01
Pickup or marina
A driver collects you from your hotel, or you make your own way to the boat. Cairo traffic is the wild card: leave time.
30 to 60 minutes
02
Board and sit down
Arrive 15 to 20 minutes early, find your table on the enclosed deck, and the boat casts off.
15 to 20 minutes
03
Buffet and show
An open buffet of Egyptian and international dishes, then live music, the spinning tanoura dancer and a belly dancer.
About 90 minutes
04
Up on deck
Climb to the open deck for the lit bridges and towers of the city, then back to the marina.
The Cairo evening, the multi-day cruise, what it costs and what to pack: one tab each.
Dinner cruise: two hours, buffet, live music and dancers on a large enclosed boat.
Felucca: a wooden sailboat for your own group, one to two hours, quiet, best around sunset.
Private felucca with dinner: the middle ground, with a waiter and a 3-course meal on a modernised felucca.
Pickup: included on some listings, an add-on on others. Check before you compare prices.
The route: Luxor to Aswan in four nights, or Aswan to Luxor downstream in three.
The stops: Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo between the two cities, with Abu Simbel as a long day trip from Aswan.
From Cairo: fly to Aswan or Luxor, or take the overnight sleeper train from Giza station.
Slower: a dahabiya is a small sailing boat with a handful of cabins that takes longer and stops where big ships cannot.
The private felucca sail is the cheapest way onto the river on this site.
A dinner cruise costs about the same as a good restaurant dinner, with the show included.
The multi-day packages cost far more, because flights, the ship and full board are in the price.
Every price is per person. Check the live price for your date on the booking page.

Where it happens
Where the boats leave from
Along the river, pickup optional
Marinas on both banks of the Nile in central Cairo and Giza
Cairo's dinner boats and feluccas moor along the corniche on both banks, from Giza and Dokki on the west side to
Garden City and the downtown piers on the east. Each listing gives its own boarding point: the Opal boards at the
Nile Crystal Gate marina, the private felucca dinner at the Cafelluca desk in Dokki. Book the hotel pickup if you can,
because finding a marina gate after dark is the hardest part of the evening.
No Cairo boat shows you the pyramids. This day trip does: the Step Pyramid at Sakkara, the open-air museum at Memphis and the Bent and Red Pyramids at Dahshur, and its VIP option ends with a felucca sail. Book it for the morning, the river for the evening.
The Nile is the reason Cairo exists, and getting onto it is easy. Getting onto the right boat takes a minute
of reading. Here is how the options really differ.
Two products, one search
Type "Nile cruise Cairo" into any booking site and the results mix a one-hour sailboat ride with an eight-day tour. They are not
rivals. The evening trips are the river as a night out: you board after dark, eat, watch a show or listen to the water,
and you are back in bed the same night. The multi-day trips are a way of travelling through Upper Egypt, with a cabin,
three meals a day and a guided temple visit most mornings. Decide which one you want before you compare a single price.
Most visitors end up doing both, in that order: a dinner boat or felucca on their first or last night in Cairo, and
the real cruise in the south in between.
A felucca sails on the wind alone, so the crew tacks back and forth across the river.
Dinner boat or felucca?
The dinner boats are big, enclosed, lit up like wedding cakes, and they follow a fixed program: buffet, a band, a
tanoura dancer whose skirts spin for minutes on end, and a belly dancer. It is touristy and nobody pretends otherwise,
and most guests love it. A felucca is the opposite. It is an open wooden boat with one big triangular sail, a captain
at the tiller and nothing on the program at all. You hear the water and the call to prayer from the bank.
Read the inclusions. The cheapest private felucca listing runs two hours but gives one hour on the water; the
rest is the drive. Some dinner cruises include the hotel pickup and some sell it as an add-on, which changes the real
price by more than the difference between boats. Our felucca vs dinner cruise guide goes boat by boat.
The honest small print: the four "Nile Crystal" boats you will find in search results (Opal, Topaz,
Turquoise and Onyx) belong to the same operator and leave from the same marina. Pick by date and price, not by name.
Getting to the real cruise
The classic Nile cruise sails between Luxor and Aswan, and it takes three nights going downstream from Aswan or four
going upstream from Luxor. Ships stop at Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo, and from Aswan most people add Abu Simbel, a long
road trip south. From Cairo you get there by plane, which is quick, or by the overnight sleeper train from Giza station,
which saves a hotel night. The packages on this page fly you both ways.
Kom Ombo is one of the temple stops between Aswan and Luxor.
Timing it
October to April is the season, and December to February is the busiest stretch. In Cairo the dinner boats run all
year, and a summer evening on the water is one of the more pleasant ways to spend a hot day's end. In Luxor and Aswan
summer is a different matter, with daytime highs that regularly pass 40°C, and temple visits start at dawn. If your
dates are flexible, our month-by-month guide sorts it out.
Winter mornings in Luxor, when the balloons go up over the west bank.
Straight answers to what people ask most about Nile cruises from Cairo.
How much does a Nile cruise from Cairo cost?
An evening on the river is cheap: the private felucca sail is the lowest price on this site, and a dinner cruise with buffet and show costs about the same as a good restaurant dinner. A real multi-day cruise is a different purchase, because the packages from Cairo include flights, the ship and full board. Check the live price for your date on the booking page; the cost guide explains what is included and what is extra.
Is a Nile cruise price for 2 people?
No. Every price on this site is per person, including the private felucca, where the boat is yours but each guest pays. On the multi-day packages, a traveller in a group who wants a room alone makes a separate booking, as the Nice Tours listings say.
Can you take a Nile cruise from Cairo to Luxor?
Rarely. The standard cruise sails between Luxor and Aswan, and the "from Cairo" packages fly you south to join it. Long Cairo to Aswan sailings exist only as occasional specialist trips, such as a 14-night 2026 departure on the 1918 steamer SS Misr. Read Cairo to Luxor by cruise for the options.
Do you see the pyramids on a Nile cruise?
Not from the water. The Giza pyramids stand on the desert plateau west of the city, away from the river, and the Luxor to Aswan ships sail hundreds of kilometres further south. Visit Giza by day and keep the river for the evening, or book a pyramids day with a felucca option.
How many days do you need for a Nile cruise?
For a Cairo evening, two hours. For the classic cruise, three nights downstream from Aswan to Luxor or four nights upstream, plus a day of travel each way from Cairo. Seven to eight days covers Cairo, the cruise and Abu Simbel without rushing.
What is the best month to go on a Nile cruise?
October to April, when days are warm rather than scorching. December to February is the peak, with cool evenings on deck. From June to August, Luxor and Aswan regularly pass 40°C. See the best time to go.
Is it safe to take a river cruise in Egypt?
The US State Department rates Egypt Level 2, "exercise increased caution", and its do-not-travel zones are North and Middle Sinai and the border areas, not the Nile Valley. Its practical warnings matter more on a cruise: most boats have no doctor on board, and you should not swim in the Nile. More in safety and dress code.
What is the dress code on a Nile cruise?
Smart casual. Shorts and T-shirts on deck by day, something a little smarter for dinner, and covered shoulders and knees for temples and mosques. Bring a light jacket: evenings on the open deck are cool from November to March.
What month does the Nile flood?
It no longer does. The flood used to rise from about June and peak in August and September, until the Aswan High Dam was completed in 1970 and Lake Nasser held the water back. Today the river is steady all year, so the boats run in every month.
Dinner cruise or felucca: which is better in Cairo?
A dinner cruise is a show: buffet, live music, tanoura and belly dancing on a big boat. A felucca is quiet: a small sailboat, your own group, and the river at sunset. Our felucca vs dinner cruise guide compares them.
Can I cancel a Nile cruise booked here?
Every tour on this site cancels for a full refund up to 24 hours before the start, and the 4-day cruise package also lets you reserve now and pay later.
